Menu

Mike ordered an Olive Appetizer which was warm assorted olives, a flageolet puree, rosemary, citrus, and grilled flat bread. For his main dish he selected the Cubano that has spicy roast pork, ham, cheese and comes with plantain chips.

Jeff ordered the Clam Chowder with sea-salt crackers. Then Jeff went with the farm-raised Salmon, Cajun spiced and pan blackened. The dish came with a crab cake, coleslaw and yam chips.

We also enjoyed some wine – selected and served by Pete “The Greek” who is Sonsie’s sommelier. We started with the Truchard Roussanne. We also decided that the wine was NOT on Gretchen’s list of desired wines. Then we ordered some other delightful beverages to accompany the meal.

LIFESTYLE – Fitness - We’re still not young, we’re still not fit, but we have taken up some exercise programs and started biking together. We talk about what it’s like to try and get back into shape. Life expectancy too.

TECHNOLOGY – Truly Interconnected World- How technology makes it so much easier to be a consumer and live your lives. Press a button, get a server. Yelp, Textaurant, and other applications are making it so easy to live your life. We digress into a Fenway park eating discussion – a rabbit hole of baseball dining ‘rules’.

RANT! Parking - Mike leads into this rant fervently while Jeff smiles and nods because he often rides a scooter into the city and avoids most of the parking woes that befall mere mortals. For today’s show, though, Jeff held a spot for Mike right in front of the restaurant and was given the medal of valor for parking compassion.

Conversation Topics

First Adopters- Not the folks who are early adopters, like the people who rush to the store to see items after they’re released to evaluate and then jump on the bandwagon. No, FIRST adopters are the people who are paving the way for the rest of the world by subjecting themselves to the errors, bad hardware and software and possible glitches that are in many products before the general release. These are the folks who need technology and need it now. About 50% of NomX Nation falls into this category!

Birthdays and Getting Older - We’re not nearly as young as we once were, but we still maintain a belief that we can move the same way we did when we were younger. Mike has a tweaked neck, Jeff has a bad back – these guys are old. Getting older stinks, and trying to perform your daily activities when you get decrepit is really hard.

RANT! Road and Refuse Rage - Jeff and Mike tell stories about bad drivers they’ve encountered and the madness of people throwing trash out of their windows. Mike believes that Dunkin Donuts is responsible for the downfall of society and the non-beautification of the globe because their cups are all over the place. Every year there should be a driver’s test – EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!

Sustainability at Turners - A side topic we covered was the way in which Turner Fisheries runs their restaurant. They do it right by using sustainable fish and seafood and also the dining area. No tablecloths in the place anymore to save on laundry and more. Good stuff.

Work shifting, sharing space and working where you can are now the model. We chat about how this came about and what’s great about this new habit/attitude/opportunity.

RANT! Bathroom Door Faux Pas! – KNOCK PLEASE! - Jeff gets wild and wooly with a rant that starts out fine and then goes fully off the rails as he weaves from the crazy into the risque. Sure, people should knock, but Jeff contends that from now on he’s leaving the door unlocked just to punish people who walk in on him while he’s atop the toilet.

1. Users, Stakeholders or Customers – Focus on your customer. They are not always your user by the way.

2. Status Symbol or Real Value - Do we buy name brand or luxury brand items for status or value?

3. RANT! Time Sucks - There is a population of people out there whose whole mission in life is to suck up other people’s time.

As Mike Langford and Jeff Cutler have determined, it’s far better to eat lunch out with friends than it is to sit at your desk and eat a yogurt. That’s the premise behind NomX3 – Let’s Do Lunch!

For years I’ve kept Mighty Subs a secret. I used to proofread manuals and perform freelance writing duties for a couple companies right off exit 19A of 128 in Needham. And Artie and Karen at Mighty Subs would always welcome me in with delightful breakfasts and tasty lunches.

So, I’m no stranger to the Mighty Sub. But Mike hadn’t been there and I wanted to impress him. See how it went.

When you walk in the front door, you might not be impressed. It looks like any lunch counter at any restaurant in the world, but the slogan – Our small is their large – gets you thinking big right off the bat. Mike Langford was ready, though.

After I told him about the sandwiches (and even mentioned I had gotten one before our GaryVee event in Boston) he was prepared to attack a full Steak Bomb. I went with my standby, the BBQ Chicken with American Cheese and BBQ sauce.

Highlights of the day. YooHoo in the drink case. Nothing better than a chocolate drink! Old friends – both Artie and Karen were on hand to watch the taping. Ellen Rossano and Jamie Rossano were in the audience.

Further, that was the same day I was doing some reporting for the New York Post in Cambridge, MA.

So as memorable as Mighty Subs is – and you will find it so – I had even more reasons to remember the day. A Mighty success if I do say so myself!

I’d give it SIX Noms if we had that many on the scale. Lunch!

4. Rant! The Drinking Age – If you are old enough to die for your country, serve as a public official or vote you should be able to choose to have a beer.

As Mike Langford and Jeff Cutler have determined, it’s far better to eat lunch out with friends than it is to sit at your desk and eat a yogurt. That’s the premise behind NomX3 – Let’s Do Lunch! Our voyage into Donohue’s was at the behest of Mike Schneider whose own show – Belching Monkey – deals with a different type of eating. The eating of beer. He thought it would be great to put Jeff Cutler and Mike Langford in front of a camera – wearing silly mustaches* – talking about beer. We thought it would be fun to cover our lifestyle, technology and rant with a beer fiend and humanitarian like Mike Schneider. So it all worked out. Here’s the episode. *The Mustaches. As you’ve seen if you’ve watched the show during the month of November, we’re sporting mustaches for charity. In honor and support of Movember, Mike and I are now mustachioed and manly. We’re raising money to help in the search for a cure for Testicular and Prostate Cancer. Learn more here. Through the course of a foggy afternoon – foggy because of the beer – we had excellent sandwiches (look for a future episode of LUNCH at Donohue’s in 2010), great conversation and beers from the 1970s and 1980s. That’s right, High Life, Bud, Naragansett, etc. They all made the cut and they all made us talk. Aside from the classic beer, we had a great studio audience for this show including Bobbie Carlton, Kelly Kassa, Steve Garfield, Todd Randolph and others. They helped keep us honest with questions tossed in about the beer and some great comments about their lunch choices. What’s my take-away? That lunch at Donohue’s is a deal. The beer was cheap and the food was good. Next time we’re there we’ll detail the menu and really go to taste town on the place. Want us to visit your favorite hangout?
Bread and Lily Cafe and Catering went without a hitch. For once we found a venue that had outlets and Wifi. It didn’t hurt that the menu was tasty and quite affordable.

Ben Cutler – lots of relation to me, Jeff Cutler – is the owner of the restaurant and bent over backward to serve us some great dishes. He also told us about house-made foods, sweet potato chips and the magic of making hungry people happy.

Best part of this episode, aside from the food shots and the brilliant conversation, is the rant I get on at the end. Take a look and tell us what you think.
